Abstract:

Provides an overview of public and private sector activity regarding interoperable information systems and data standards, and a summary of the evidence supporting the use of information technology in health care. Discusses the importance of pilot projects and additional work still needed in this area.

The accompanying appendix gives an analysis of clinical data exchange efforts in community-based projects in an effort to discover common findings that could prove useful in considering future models and identifying common themes that could predict success.
