Eminent Domain, Private Property, and Redevelopment: An Economic Analysis
Publication Date: February 2005
Publisher(s): Reason Foundation
Author(s): John P. Blair; Samuel R. Staley
Topic: Economics (Property and wealth)
Type: Report
Abstract:
This report looks at eminent domain through the lens of urban economic development and revitalization, and
questions whether its application in cities justifies its use. Even local development officials acknowledge that
eminent domain should be used "wisely, and with considerable caution." Substantial evidence exists to
question whether officials are practicing what they preach. Indeed, as Part 3 demonstrates, in some cases
eminent domain has become a tool of first resort (and sometimes the only tool).
