Abstract:
This essay is adapted from "Picturing Jews and Gender," the authors' analysis of eight focus groups conducted with Jewish and non-Jewish women and men under the auspices of the Morning Star Commission. The essay further contextualizes and expands this analysis, placing the focus group data into several frameworks, including cultural representation of Jews and of ethnic women, recent research on the sociology of American Jews, and the roles of image and gender in ethnic identity construction.
