Abstract:
The author discusses the emergence of social work as a professional field, comparing it to the modern recognition of the rabbi as a professional man. He argues that the Jewish community should follow the gentile community in recognizing the special expertise and comptence of professional social workers as opposed to volunteer amateurs, however talented.
