Abstract:
The author tells the story of Anna B. Heldman, a nurse in the "Hill" neighborhood of Pittsburgh who has also come to serve as its unofficial sanhedrin (Jewish court), counseling and arbitrating domestic disagreements, as well as helping people negotiate the secular court system and serving as a coordinator of services.
