Abstract:
Raising public awareness about a disturbing social phenomenon such as elder abuse is a difficult undertaking. Project AEGIS, an innovative four-year community education and outreach program, heightened public consciousness of elder abuse through brochures, newsletters, media appearances, a telephone hot line, and training to professionals and paraprofessionals working with the elderly. As a result, the Nassau County Department of Social Services reported a nearly 90% increase in referrals to its Adult Protective Services Unit.
