Abstract:

This article, originally published in the Fall 2001 issue of the Virginia Journal of Social Policy & the Law, reviews the history and current status of the federal governmentÂ’s role in marriage. It also outlines five different roles the federal government can plan to strengthen marriage, if and when this becomes a national goal.
