Abstract:
The author asserts that the most important strategy for protecting American Jews is not simply to fight defamation of Jews, but to support democratic freedoms and institutions that foster internal and external constraints which will cause citizens to treat Jews with civility, whether their personal feelings about Jews are positive or negative. The author further explores the way ethnic identity is seen in political terms in the United States.
