Abstract:
The author describes the shift in his agency (The Jewish Institute for Geriatric Care in New Hyde Park, NY) from the traditional model of elder care to a new model. While the old model focused on providing a nurturing "cocoon" within the institution in which the elders lived out the rest of their lives, the new model favors three R's -- rehabilitation, restoration and return to community. The author details his agency's process in pursuit of these goals.
