Abstract:
This article describes the major components of a residential program designed to treat mentally ill children ages 12-18. The program consists of three boys and one girl, all of whom are placed together in an 8-bedroom home and examined for observational study. The article outlines an approach for developing social competency that involves emulating a demographically average middle-class home and includes introducing the subject to “normal†daily experiences. The author argues that introducing mentally-ill youth to group residential programs like these may be more advantageous than traditional mental health models.
