Abstract:
This article seeks to look beyond the clashes between leaders of Jewish religious denominations in order to evaluate the state of Jewish religious life. Discussing Jewish life from the late 1960s to the late 1980s, Wertheimer asks: how do patterns of religious observance today compare with those of the recent past? What are the major concerns of the Jewish laity, and how have the rabbinic elites responded to these concerns?
