Abstract:
The author proposes tying a "benevolent tether" to high school upperclassmen through a mentoring program in order to harness social capital. This program would match students with adult role models from different areas of career accomplishment and communal involvement. The author discusses the two-way dynamic of the program he envisions, and the value provided by mentoring which cannot be duplicated by classes or books.
