Abstract:
The author explores the life of Elsie Chomsky, a major figure for decades in Jewish education in Philadelphia and mother of Noam Chomsky, an internationally known scholar and public intellectual. She recounts Chomsky's childhood, educational history, teaching accomplishments, and family life. She contrasts Chomsky's ardent Hebrew nationalism and Zionism with her son's anti-Israel stance.
