Abstract:
The article evaluates two tools used for the study of American Jewry: the National Jewish Population Survey (NJPS) and the use of indirect measures such as languages spoken at home or mother tongue subpopulations drawn from a national survey. The author argues that for many purposes, research questions of importance for the study of American Jewry would be batter answered with a much less widely appreciated body of data such as the NJPS.
