Abstract:

The author asserts that the field of adult Jewish education, especially in the teaching of the Hebrew Bible and other classical religious texts, has not generally defined and articulated its goals. Adult education is treated only as a defensive measure, the author notes, used to shield students from ignorance and assimilation. Adult education is too seldom used in order to genuinely stimulate and develop skills in the students that will allow them to contribute to the world of Torah learning, according to the author. He outlines methods of teaching that allow more proactive growth on the part of students.
