Abstract:
The author, a Reform rabbi, argues that the organized Jewish community puts too little emphasis on Jewish values and the Jewish religion. Jewish education, the author contends, is treated as a stepchild, and contributions to synagogues and Jewish funds are treated as indulgences to excuse lo levels of Jewish affiliation, knowledge and practice. The author advocates sublimating many of the social services currently conducted by the Jewish community into agencies of the broader community, allowing Jewish organizations to concentrate more fully on Jewish values.
