Abstract:

The author explores ways in which social services organizations define social worker responsibilities, and what assumptions of a proper workload are used to assign duties. These assumptions ought to be reevaluated, the author suggests, in order to make the best use of each worker's strengths. She contends that job definition need not be fixed prior to hiring, nor need each worker have identical responsibilities; rather, the agency should focus on its overall goals and allow for flexibility of job requirements in order to form the best way for the team to meet those goals over time.
