Abstract:

The author argues that antiquated ideas regarding the nature of social services and support from the needy are widespread in modern times. He outlines major streams of thought vis-a-vis social responsibility, including classical Greco-Roman ideas, Jewish ideas, Christian ideas, and popular culture ideas in modernity. Social workers must educate the public to ensure that social services are not seen as spoiling or coddling, the author maintains.
