Abstract:

The author discusses the positive experience of her agency, the Jewish Board of Guardians, a mental health agency in New York City, with a "non-threatening intervention" program for boys in maternally-headed homes. The program, called the Fatherless Boys Project, endeavors to forestall the development of serious emotional problems by sustaining some participants outside of a treatment situation, while ensuring that other children who do need treatment receive it. The author also provides a case illustration.
