Abstract:
The author traces the development of Jewish communal and welfare organizations in the 19th Century United States, demonstrating a shift away from a sole focus on individualized tzedakah (charity) and towards central planning and social services to alleviate the need for individualized charity in the first place. The author discusses major personalities in this shift, as well as the interplay of these social ideas with religious themes and international news of the times.
