Abstract:

The author discusses experiences from the Chicago Jewish community with the resettlement of Soviet Jews. It is crucial to realize that Soviet Jews are immigrants and not refugees, the author asserts, meaning that Soviet Jews arrive not out of pure desperation, but with clear expectations of a better life. The author describes aspects of resettled Soviet Jews' social and societal perspectives which his agency found it needed to learn, and perspectives of American life which he feels Soviet Jews need to learn in order to maximize their experiences in the United States.
