Congress is now considering the FY2004 budget for the Department of Defense(DOD). The conference version of the FY2004 DOD Appropriations Act (H.R. 2658/H.Rept. 108-283) was passed by theHouse by a vote of 407 to 15 on September 24, 2003, and by the Senate on the following day by 95 to 0. The bill provides a total of $368.7 billion for the defense programs it covers. The Senate substituted the text of the committee-reported version of the bill, S. 1382, into the House version, H.R. 2658 and passed its version on July 17, 2003. The House passed its version of the
bill on July 8 by a vote of 399 to 19. Both the House and Senate versions of the bill provided $369.2 billion for defense programs.
