Abstract:

After defining the settlement as "a group of men and women of education living together in a working-class neighborhood for the purpose of establishing mutually helpful relations with their neighbor," the author considers the distinctive nature of the Jewish settlement that has arisen from its particular historical development. For example, they are less residential in nature and are more narrowly focused on one portion of the community they serve, even to the exclusion of immediate neighbors.
