Abstract:
Referring to Jewish history and texts, the author calls on the American Jewish community to rise to answer the needs of the European Jewish immigrants driven from their home by persecution and war. Charity must be repudiated in favor of social service and tzadakah (righteousness). A discussion of concrete challenges faced and tactics tried by Jewish agencies across the country follows.
