Abstract:
The author critiques social and philanthropic work for being to concerned with the outside view and not taking account of psychological issues in working with clients, especially when dealing with family issues. Instead of simply looking for more rights to impose decisions on families getting aid, social workers need to learn about and deeply consider the psychological issues at play when recipients do not seem willing or able to comply with their advice or orders. Methods should be developed so that social workers everywhere can share and benefit from a systematic, standardized psychological approach.
