Abstract:
The author describes the advantages in population dispersion and opportunities for employment of establishing New Orleans as a port of landing for new Jewish European immigrants. In order to best facilitate successful entry at New Orleans, there must be fast steamship travel between Europe and New Orleans, to minimize health issues that arise at sea, reasonably priced rail service and the opening of the Panama Canal, to enable immigrants, especially with farming backgrounds, to easily move further west, and an effective Immigrant Bureau, based on the Galveston model.
