Abstract:
The author criticizes the Jewish public for taking a short sighted view of charity. Rather than narrowly focusing on meeting the basic needs of the hopelessly dependent for the least administrative cost, Jewish charity needs to be willing to invest more and more broadly to provide services and support before individuals and families descend completely into dependence, which would better promote independence and financial stability in the community.
