Abstract:
The author explains why the People's Institute of Chicago charges for each and every service, class, or activity which it holds or hosts. The practice of charging even a nominal fee helps instill self respect in clients, encourage students and participants to take their attendance seriously, enables the Institute to pay teachers and lecturers instead of relying on volunteers, thus increasing quality in every aspect, and makes management accountable for the quality of the Institute overall.
