Abstract:
The author describes the process of coordinating disparate charitable work in Hartford, Connecticut into an umbrella organization originally entirely volunteer run. He describes the principal challenge as dealing with the expectations of the Orthodox Jewish community, who take a different, less critical approach to both asking for and offering aid, especially in the case of migrants. This difference has caused significant instability for the federation and he is struggling to come up with a constructive program for dealing with transients that inspires confidence throughout the community.
