Abstract:

The author describes one small community's first step towards cooperative charitable enterprise. Rather than having each institution do its own collection and distribution of Passover supplies for needy families, the local burial and funeral society, Adath Israel of Brownsville and East New York, established a communal Matzoth Fund which centralized the distribution, though not the collection, of funds and supplies. In this way they were better able both to prevent abuse of the system and to reach families in need. Following this fairly successful venture in the direction of cooperation, an attempt to federate the various charities in the community will soon be made.
