Abstract:

The author criticizes the traditional conception of craft classes in senior centers as being primarily about socialization, advocating instead a greater emphasis on concrete skills-development so as to provide seniors with ongoing challenges and a sense of accomplishment. Paraprofessional senior citizen volunteers can be used, with proper supervision, to teach crafts to other seniors.
