Abstract:

The author analyzes charitable giving patterns of Jews in metropolitan Boston, testing the hypothesis that age and charitable giving are directly related. He demonstrates that age has both a direct effect on giving and indirect effects through income, occupation, and Jewish involvement. Insofar as the connection between age and giving can be seen as a cohort rather than a life cycle or temporary effect, there is reason for pessimism regarding the future vitality of organized American Jewry.
