Abstract:
The author examines traditional Jewish ideas regarding the role of Jewish women as found in the Bible, the traditional ketubah and aspects of traditional Halacha. She further examines the impact of Emancipation, the Reform movement and other aspects of modernity on the way many Jewish women see themselves in modern society. The author argues that today, imposed definitions of male and female roles are difficult to support, and that Jews should re-examine Jewish traditions and institutions to respond to today's Jewish woman, who is asking for full participation.
