Abstract:
The author examines the historical development of Jewish self-conception, from an all-encompassing national identity to modern conceptions such as a religious or ethnic sub-group within wider non-Jewish milieus. He advocates a revitalization of the original conception of the Jewish people as an Am, a nation.
