Abstract:
The tension between the religious meaning of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah and conspicuous consumption reflected in lavish parties led to the formation of the Cleveland Bar/Bat Mitzvah Task Force. It has created and disseminated community guidelines for celebrating B'nai Mitzvah and a Bar/Bat Mitzvah Planner and has sponsored educational programs and a community dialogue. Including all relevant stakeholders in this communal initiative was essential.
