Abstract:
When the federal govemment began providing relief through the Social Security Act of 1935, Jewish family service agencies had to redefine their mission. Their focus shifted from the provision of relief to the provision of counseling and social services. The period of the Great Depression has important implications for the current situation in which govemment is again redefining its function.
