Abstract:
The authors assert that synagogues hold unrealized potential for creating Jewish community and must be reconfigured. They argue that significant and enduring change must meet two criteria: (1) It must focus on the synagogue as a system, rather than on discrete programs within it; (2) rather than simply accepting the congregation's purported goals as given, it must also help its leaders rethink these goals. They suggest beginning a process of change by focusing on Jewish learning.
