Abstract:

This article deals with overall estimates for the 1970 Jewish population, derived from the National Jewish Population Survey (NJPS). The author makes the distinction between the population in households (defined as having at least one Jewish person) and the number of Jews in such households. While this difference has always been known to exist, the NJPS expresses this distinction in numbers for the first time.
