Abstract:
Israel's Jewish population (not including more than 300,000 non-Jewish immigrants admitted in the framework of the Law of Return) approached 5.4 million in 2007, or 41% of world Jewry. This represented a watershed in Jewish population history: after critically reviewing all available evidence on Jewish demographic trends, it is plausible to claim that Israel has overtaken the United States in hosting the largest Jewish community worldwide. Dissenting opinions on this issue will be reviewed later in this article.
