Abstract:
This article uses the history of the Black-Jewish encounter in America to understand aspects of the American Jewish experience, specifically, intergroup relations. It focuses on the role of the American Jewish community in the civil rights movement and on specific moments of conflict between these groups, specifically as related to Black American antisemitism, such as the 1991 Crown Heights riots.
