Abstract:
The author recounts his experiences visiting Soviet Jewish "refuseniks", applicants for exit visas to Israel or the United States who had been denied the right to emigrate by the Soviet government. He criticizes aspects of the trend of foreign Jews visiting refuseniks and treating them almost as tourist attractions. He compares the situation of Soviet Jews to the Zionist awakenings in European Jewish communities in decades past.
