Abstract:
The authors discuss their reasons for convening a graduate colloquium in Jewish studies (the first of its kind) at the University of Illinois at Urbana in April 2005. Among these were the question: what is the difference between Jewish studies and studying Jews? The authors also discuss themes from the colloquium, including the ways in which Jews invarying locations and contexts imagined themselves to be part of a larger European civilization.
