Abstract:

The author describes the undergraduate requirements at the Department of Jewish Studies at Rutgers University, and the department's goals of striking a balance between intellectual commitments and student interests. Even where materials are culturally familiar to students, the author says, the department strives to introduce unexpected intellectual approaches.
