Abstract:
Smoking cessation treatments have long been recognized for their medical- and cost-effectiveness. Yet, cessation treatments are not provided as widely as they should be. Based on original research as well as a review of existing literature, this report, supported by RWJF, details cessation coverage provided by states through Medicaid programs, state employee health plans, standards for private insurance and quitlines. It provides a list of common barriers to smoking cessation coverage and recommendations from the American Lung Association to improve state coverage of cessation treatments.
