Abstract:

TFAH (Trust for America's Health) issued its fourth annual report, "Ready or Not: Protecting the Public's Health from Disease, Disasters and Bioterrorism," which serves as a tool to guide federal, state and local decision-makers in identifying vulnerabilities and making improvements to better protect the public's health. The report suggests that, five years after September 11th, public health preparedness falls far short of expectations.

The report examines state-by-state health preparedness, focusing on 10 key indicators. Taken collectively, these indicators offer a composite snapshot of health emergency preparedness, including strengths and vulnerabilities. Currently, no other national standards or evaluation of state preparedness activities are made available to the public.
