Abstract:
Holly A. Massett, Ph.D., a senior research scientist with the Health Communication Program at the Research Triangle Institute (RTI) in Washington, D.C., and Lisa S. Wolff, M.A., research supervisor at communications company Porter Novelli, reviewed existing literature on prevention communication, held more than 30 focus groups, and surveyed more than 1,800 American adults to discover how patients perceive their doctors' role in disease prevention, and how likely they are to heed a doctor's advice. RWJF funded the study. Dr. Massett and Wolff presented their findings to the Foundation-funded Prescription for Health national meeting in Colorado in September 2003, and the American Public Health Association in November 2003.
