Abstract:
Employees of small firms, and their dependents, account for almost half of the 6.8 million uninsured Californians. Cost is the primary factor influencing the decision to offer health insurance among small businesses, but other factors contribute to the decision. Research has shown that California small businesses not offering health insurance are not as well informed about the market as are those that offer health insurance. Might something as basic as information induce more small firms to offer health coverage? To explore this question, King, Brown, and Partners performed qualitative research on the role played by information in health insurance purchasing decisions among small California businesses (2 to 50 employees).
