Abstract:

Over one quarter of first-term Army accessions do not complete their enlistment term, despite being contractually obligated to do so. This attrition costs the Army hundreds of millions of dollars each year and has motivated a longstanding research agenda to reduce the number of early separations. This study examines the relationship between a variety of Army recruit characteristics and the overall likelihood and timing of first-term enlisted attrition. This study also investigates possible similarities between adverse, medical, and pregnancy categories of attrition.
