Abstract:
Mobile computing has become an important part of health care's information technology toolbox. Technology advances and the proliferating health care applications indicate that mobile computing will find a secure place in both inpatient and outpatient care. Organizations can investigate the benefits technology offers and how mobile technology would fit in with current information systems, workflow, and care practices. This report serves as a guide for health care clinicians and administrators who want to understand mobile computing and wireless technology concepts in health care. Geared toward nontechnical readers, it provides a snapshot of the marketplace in 2001. Technical information on capabilities, issues, connectivity, and anticipated developments is included in the appendices and referenced in the text for those interested in more detail. A vendor list and a basic glossary are also included.
