U.S. and Mexicin longkterm interests would be served by American policies that encourage the Mexican government to adapt its system to the needs of its productive sector and to the democratic aspirations of its people. While this could result in a short period of political disequilibrium, in the long run the U.S. would be ensuring a more prosperous and stable Mexico, which would mean greater security for the U.S.
